WHAT DO WE DO

What Do We Do?

Person Centred Plan - PCP

On a Person Centred Plan the care and support focus on the needs of the individual rather than the individual being made to fit existing routines or ways of doing things. It ensures that people’s preferences, needs, and values guide the choices and decisions which will be part of their Support Plan.

The PCP will aim to promote independence and look at what the person can do for themselves. It does not mean leaving the person to cope alone but agreeing the support they need and want. The teaching methods will also be person centred.

Communication Methods

Many people with Autism and Learning Disabilities have difficulties with interacting and communicating with others and may have problems understanding what others say to them. At Bensham Resource Centre we identify these difficulties and use various methods to support communication. These methods are tailored specifically for each User to suit their preferred way of communicating.

  • Verbal Communication: It is imperative that it is clear and precise language – No use of jargons, slang, jokes, or sarcasm.
  • Visual Support: Can be in a format of pictures, symbols, videos, tactile items/objects, photographs, drawings, lists, social stories.
  • Body Language and facial expressions
  • Makaton and other sign language

Our Staff are trained to allow the Users time to process the information and take time to listen to them.

At Bensham Resource Centre we run a weekly Discussion Group when all Users are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions on current topics in their own manner of communicating.

Behaviour that Challenges and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Some people with Autism and Learning Disabilities display behaviour that might put themselves or others at risk. It is important to understand that a behaviour has a meaning and a function.

  • Challenging Behaviour might take the form of hitting, biting, spitting, or pulling hair, shouting, or swearing.
  • With careful observation and a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plan the behaviour can be better managed.

At Bensham Resource Centre we develop, unique to the User, strategies to deal with distressed behaviour, changes, repetitive behaviour, and other more serious self-inflicted harm.

Positive Behaviour Support - (PBS) is a person-centred approach for people with Autism or a Learning Disability who may be at risk of displaying Challenging Behaviours.

  • The PBS will seek to understand the reasons and triggers for the behaviour so that unmet needs can be identified and met.
  • The PBS will consider the person as a whole – their life story, physical health, and emotional needs.
  • The PBS is a proactive and preventative plan, focusing on the teaching of new skills to replace behaviour that Challenge.
